KKnee pain is a common complaint of exercisers and non-exercisers alike. Often, the real cause of knee pain is actually a muscle imbalance elsewhere. Weakness of the hip musculature, particularly the deep external rotators of the hip, is a common cause of knee pain.
In the video below, I’ll demonstrate different exercises designed to specifically strengthen the hips and calves to address muscle imbalances common to knee pain. Addressing these muscle imbalances can permanently resolve knee pain and symptoms.
My top 3 videos on self-treating knee pain:
Clamshell Exercises: The “Go-To” Exercise for Foot, Hip, and Knee Pain – The clamshell exercise is a commonly used exercise designed to target the hip abductors and hip external rotators. However, this exercise is often performed incorrectly or ineffectively. In this video, I show my preferred method of flipping exercises to ensure the best results.
How to Use the Clamshell Hip Exercise for Knee Pain – Knee pain is the most common running-related injury. The root cause of many of the most common knee-related problems is weakness in the hips. One of the best ways to treat many common running pains is to focus on strengthening these muscles, including the gluteus medius, tensor fascia lata, and other deep hip rotators. In this video, I demonstrate how to do the clamshell exercise. This is an excellent non-weight-bearing exercise that develops the strength of the hip rotators, which directly affect knee stability.
Barbell Knee Stability Exercise for Runners – In this video, I demonstrate how to do an advanced exercise called Clock or Star Diamond. This is a great exercise for developing stability and balance in the knees, while paying special attention to quadriceps and hip strength.
