raw material
To make keto peanut butter, you only need one ingredient: raw or roasted unsalted peanuts. This means the peanut butter doesn’t contain any added sugar, preservatives, or other unnecessary ingredients commonly found in store-bought or flavored peanut butters.
- peanut – Use roasted peanuts so you don’t have to roast them at home. I chose to use unsalted peanuts, but you can also use salted peanuts. Keep in mind that some peanuts can be very salty.
See recipe card for quantities and ingredients.
instruct
Making keto peanut butter is a very simple process.
However, you’ll want to make sure the food processor is clean and completely dry before making peanut butter. If water gets into the peanut butter when you make it, the peanuts will get stuck. So make sure to dry it completely.
First, place the roasted peanuts in a high powered food processor or blender.
Process the peanuts for about 2-3 minutes, with the lid off, scraping down the sides of the processor/blender if needed. The peanut butter will still be quite thick.
Cover and process for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until completely smooth and creamy.
Once the peanut butter is smooth and creamy, transfer it to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 weeks.
If the keto peanut butter is too thick for your liking at this point, process it for a few more minutes to thin it out.
Alternatively, you can add a little healthy fat like olive or avocado oil to thin it out.
hint: When making peanut butter, no sweetener, salt, or flavoring should be added to the food processor to ensure the peanuts don’t get stuck. If you want to flavor your peanut butter, it has to be blended after the peanut butter is smooth.
Substitution
If you’re not a fan of peanut butter, or you have a peanut allergy, you may be wondering what alternatives you can substitute for keto peanut butter. Fortunately, you can choose from a variety of options that are both delicious and nutritious.
- almond butter – This is one of my favorite nut butters. It’s easy to make, just use toasted almonds and follow the same instructions.
- Sunflower seed oil – Roasted and hulled sunflower seeds can be used to make sunflower oil.
- Macadamia Nut Butter – Follow the same instructions for roasted macadamia nuts.
- Cashew Butter – Use pre-roasted cashews and process as you would use peanuts.
Almond butter, sunflower butter, cashew butter, and macadamia nut butter are all delicious and nutritious options that are perfect for a low-carb, high-fat diet.
Variety
Keto peanut butter is delicious on its own, but you can easily customize the taste by adding different ingredients. Blend the addition into the peanut butter only after it has been processed and smooth in the food processor. Here are five keto peanut butter flavor variations you can try:
- Chocolate Peanut Butterr – Unsweetened cocoa powder and low carb sweetener in peanut butter. This will give it a rich and decadent chocolate flavor.
- Cinnamon Peanut Butter – Mix ground cinnamon into peanut butter for a warming flavor.
- Vanilla Peanut Butter – Add a drop or two of pure vanilla extract to the peanut butter for a subtle yet sweet taste.
- Maple Peanut Butter – Add a small amount of sugar-free maple syrup.
- Spicy Peanut Butter – Add a pinch of cayenne or paprika to the peanut sauce for a bold and spicy flavor.

equipment
Making keto peanut butter is an easy process that requires very few tools and equipment. Here are the basic items you need to make your own keto peanut butter:
- food processor or high-speed blender: The most important piece of equipment you need to make keto peanut butter is a food processor or high-speed blender.
- measuring cup and spoon: Accurately measure ingredients.
- spatula or spoon: Need to scrape the sides of the food processor or blender with a spatula or spoon to ensure all ingredients are well mixed.
- sealed container: After you make keto peanut butter, you need an airtight container to store it in. This will help keep it fresh and keep it from drying out.
storage
Proper storage is key to keeping your keto peanut butter fresh and delicious for as long as possible. Here are some tips on how to store keto peanut butter:
- store in an airtight container: After making keto peanut butter, transfer it to an airtight container such as a jar or a food storage container with a lid. This will help prevent air and moisture from getting in and ruining the peanut butter.
- refrigeration: Homemade peanut butter must be refrigerated to extend its shelf life. Cool temperatures help preserve freshness and prevent rotting. You can keep peanut butter in the refrigerator for several weeks. On the counter, it will spoil faster.
- freeze: Yes, you can freeze peanut butter. If you make a big batch of ketogenic peanut butter and don’t plan to use it up in a few weeks, you can freeze it for extended storage. Transfer the peanut butter to a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag and store in the refrigerator. Frozen peanut butter will keep for several months.
- stir before use: Over time, the oil in the peanut butter may separate and rise to the top of the container. Just be sure to give the peanut butter a good stir to recombine the oil before using it. Since no oil is added to this peanut butter, the oil won’t separate like store-bought natural peanut butter.
By following these storage tips, you can keep your keto peanut butter fresh and delicious for as long as possible. Enjoy your peanut butter on its own, or use it as a tasty and healthy ingredient in your favorite recipes.
top tips
Make sure the peanuts completely cover the blades of the food processor. I used 3 cups of peanuts, but if you have a larger food processor, you may need to use more peanuts to cover the blades. If you don’t have enough peanuts, your peanut butter probably won’t turn out smooth.
FAQ
Like most commercial peanut butter brands, Jif Peanut Butter often contains added sugar and other ingredients, such as hydrogenated oils, that may not be keto friendly. These extra ingredients increase the carb and calorie count, which can make it difficult to adapt to a ketogenic diet.
The carbohydrate content of peanut butter can vary widely depending on the brand and the ingredients used. In general, the peanut butters that are lowest in carbs are those that are made with only peanuts, since they don’t contain any added sugar or other ingredients that can increase your carb content.
Like any food, eating too much peanut butter may throw you out of ketosis. It is important to keep your carbohydrate intake low on a ketogenic diet.Peanut butter does contain some carbohydrates, usually around 3-4 grams per serving, so portion size is important
Pair keto peanut butter with low-carb options like celery sticks, cucumber slices, or almond crackers. These foods will add fiber and nutrients to your snack and help keep carb levels low.
It’s very common to see a layer of oil on top of natural peanut butter, and it’s completely normal. Natural peanut butter is made from ground peanuts, and because peanuts are naturally high in oil, the oil separates and rises to the top of the jar. If this happens, stir the peanut butter to re-introduce the oil.
Here are some peanut butter brands that are generally low in carbs and made with only peanuts: Smucker’s Natural Peanut Butter, Crazy Richard’s 100% Peanuts Peanut Butter, Trader Joe’s Organic Creamy Valencia Peanut Butter, Once Again Organic Creamy Peanut Butter.
